Piano Keyboard Workshop Se Jewel Case ##HOT##

If you wish to major in music, you must audition for admission to the department. This can be done at the same time as an award audition. Non-majors also may audition for a music award. Awards are competitive and are distributed based on talent, as both a reflection of your achievement before coming to Jewell and also as an investment in your potential achievement. All awards require some participation in the department, usually in the form of applied lessons for at least four semesters and membership in one or more ensembles. Students may audition on instrument(s), voice, piano or a combination. For more information, contact Anne Aunspaugh at music@william.jewell.edu.

The workshop focuses on four-hand piano repertoire. Participants will be paired together and four-hand repertoire can be selected by each team or assigned by the faculty. Each four-hand duo will receive three 75 minute coachings. There will be time for practice, rehearsal, and sight-reading. The workshop will culminate in student concerts. In addition, there will be group and private Alexander Technique sessions, as well as four-handed sightreading sessions with the faculty. Pre-existing four-hand teams are especially welcome.

Bartolomeo Cristofori was the first person to create a successful hammer-action keyboard instrument and, accordingly, deserves to be credited as the inventor of the piano. This example is the oldest of the three extant pianos by Cristofori. About 1700 he began to work on an instrument on which the player could achieve changes in loudness solely by changing the force with which the keys were struck. By 1700 he had made at least one successful instrument, which he called "gravicembalo col piano e forte" (harpsichord with soft and loud). His instrument still generally resembles a harpsichord, though its case is thicker and the quill mechanism has been replaced by a hammer mechanism. Cristofori's hammer mechanism is so well designed and made that no other of comparable sensitivity and reliability was devised for another seventy-five years. In fact, the highly complex action of the modern piano may be traced directly to his original conception.

Both Bosendorfer and Steinway use spruce wood in the interior of their pianos, though Steinway specifically uses Sitka Spruce for its trademark soundboard. The soundboard, along with the Hard Rock Maple case, helps to produce a rich sound that projects well in concert halls around the globe.
